What is Wing Chun?
Wing Chun Kung Fu is a self defence system and a martial art that is suitable for anyone regardless of age, gender, or physical stature.
Wing Chun Kung Fu is focused on finding the shortest distance between the attacker and yourself whilst using effective, efficient methods of simultaneous attack and defence. With it being a responsive self defence art, the student’s goal is to to respond automatically, just like blinking and breathing.
Wing Chun is suitable for everyone, not just the few and is taught in a safe, controlled way that allows you to build confidence whilst gaining fitness and discipline at the same time.
It also builds a pre-fight mentality giving you a greater insight to the build up of an aggressive confrontation and how to deal with it.
Class Structure
We have divided each class into six core subjects and is taught through either a technical style Wing Chun class or a physical style class, “learning or applying”
- Forms – There are 6 forms in the Wing Chun system, and these have many purposes but for a new beginner, they can be used to learn the positions of our arms and legs (SNT, Chum Kiu etc).
- Sparring– Learning and applying Wing Chun Kung Fu in a classroom environment
- Chi Sao – Learning to stick and feel your assailant’s pressure and react to it.
- Punches – Once a fight starts you have to be able hit someone hard if you are going to stop them. A great punch is your most useful tool in self defence.
- Footwork – The better your footwork, the more balance you have, the quicker you can move and the harder you can hit. The importance of great footwork cannot be overstated in the art of Wing Chun.
- Theory – Developing an understanding of the ideas behind how you should be and act as a Wing Chun martial artist. This will give you everything you need to apply the art to suit you as an individual.
Student Phases
Our Wing Chun Kung Fu self defence training is split over 3 phases:
Phase One (Beginner Level Grades 1 – 4) is designed to introduce the student to the art of Wing Chun, develop the core basics of the six subjects above and learn to deal with a stand up fighter through our 4 beginner fighting programs.
Phase Two (Intermediate Level Grades 5 – 8) is about closing the range as Wing Chun is a close quarter combat system. The student begins the second form, expands their Chi Sau training to include two hands, and learns to control an opponent from a closer range with our knees and elbows, anti-grappling, anti-throwing and anti-ground programs.
Phase Three (Advanced Level Grades 9 – 12) deals with specialised areas of self defence and how Wing Chun Kung Fu can be used to gain an understanding of how to deal with counter kicking, knives and other striking implements, as well as being involved in a situation where there is more than one opponent, and control and restraint.
For more information on our Adults Wing Chun Kung Fu Curriculum click here.
As the student reaches the end of each phase we perform a grading at the Fulham Wing Chun Martial Arts school or at our Regional Wing Chun Kung Fu Headquarters in South Kensington. During this testing the student will revisit each grade in that phase covering specific elements. Once passing the phase the student is allowed to progress to the next phase.
Master Levels
Once the student has gained their 12th grade they can then set their goals to become a Master of Wing Chun. Here the student will learn the Biu Tze Form, Wooden Dummy Form, Butterfly Knives Form, Long Pole Form and perfect their prior knowledge in order to achieve the Level of Master of Wing Chun Kung Fu.
Each individual student is different and the style of Wing Chun Kung Fu they develop is their own. If you’re in the Fulham area looking for fitness, confidence and self defence skills, then enquire below to start your Wing Chun Kung Fu journey today!

Chelsea Martial Arts Little Dragon Classes
Little Dragons (4 years – 6 years) Chelsea Children’s Martial Arts
The Little Dragons Kung Fu classes are designed to help develop balance, confidence, self control, discipline, focus and many other Life Skills that will help prepare your child for their journey in both the martial arts school and the wider world.
In this class we focus 80% on life skills and 20% on Martial Arts training. As your child becomes older the balance of life skills and martial arts changes to reflect the level of ability your child has gained.
Wing Chun Kung Fu is a practical self defence martial art and is designed so that anyone can use it to protect themselves in a confrontational situation. As the children build their discipline and patience we can start to introduce them to Wing Chun Kung Fu more formally through our Black Belt course.
Childrens Class Structure
- Prep Zone – An area allocated for the children to get organised before the Kung Fu class, we expect the children to be able to work through their moves by themselves. A prep zone leader is selected whose task is to guide other students with their martial arts. New students will be introduced to some basic martial arts positions by the instructor or prep zone leader to allow them to participate comfortably in the class.
- Student Creed – The student creed is an oath the child makes to themselves on how they are going to act during the Kung Fu class as well as at home and at school.
- Warm up, Exercise and Stretches – In this 10 minute slot we go through a variety of exercises to get the child’s heart beating as well as teach them the correct positions, these exercises are related to the curriculum we are working through.
- Drills for skills/Recap –The child’s skill and understanding of their Martial Arts curriculum begins to develop through a series of combinations, here we look at what the children have learned over the grading cycle and develop what they have learned from the previous grading cycles.
- Mat Chat – Here we discuss one of 12 Traits Of A Black Belt each week, looking at how we can use this trait in our daily lives to become better people or in our martial arts class to become better martial artists.
- New Curriculum – Each week we learn a new move from within one of our four basic programs.
- Rewards – This section of the class is dedicated to rewarding the children with their new sashes, tip stripes and badges.

As your child moves through the curriculum the structure of the class evolves. By the time your child reaches the age of 13 they will have developed leadership skills as we will have them leading certain parts of the class, this is designed to help to build confidence, self esteem and the positive, determined attitude Wing Chun Kung Fu encourages throughout your child’s journey.
As you can see from the moment your child enters the school there is no downtime; our classes themselves are nonstop.
